In this course, we will take a hands-on approach to learning about open source Web content management systems (CMS). No prior experience with CMS is required for this course, though it will be helpful to be familiar with XHTML, CSS, php and mySQL. Upon completion of this course you will:

  • Be able to establish and apply criteria for choosing an appropriate CMS; (see this example)
  • Understand the basic components of a CMS including how to:
    • Create, revise, update and delete content
    • Manage user privileges
    • Update navigation
    • Install components, modules, and plug-ins
    • Upgrade your CMS, as required
    • Perform basic modifications to templates
  • Be able to evaluate and implement third-party plugins including those used for:
    • Calendars and event registration
    • Captcha
    • Chat and forums
    • Community building
    • Ecommerce
    • Photo Galleries
  • Have hands-on experience working with Joomla!, Drupal and WordPress.

Remember that this is a Writing Emphasis course. Although it means that we will be writing and discussing writing, it does not necessarily mean that this course involves proportionately more writing than other courses.
