I have been consulting on a part-time basis since roughly 1991, though I didn't become serious about my consulting activities until 1995. My first project was to troubleshoot a new, and groundbreaking library acquisition system called GEAC at the Minneapolis Public Library. After analyzing patterns in the errors the system was making we realized the problem wasn't with the system, but that the employees using the system hadn't been properly trained to use the system. After that project, I was hooked both on consulting, and on how technology serves as both a barrier and a useful tool.

These days, I don't consult nearly as much as I have in the past. I tend to focus on those clients and projects that provide some real interest and challenge. Typically, I consult with no more than one or two organizations at any given time, ensuring you receive the attention your project deserves.

Currently, I tend to focus primarily on web content management systems, and issues associated with access to and use of information. In this area, I have most recently completed some visualizations and a database to help a community-based leadership group better communicate with each other. This fall, I hope to engage with a number of local organizations to determine how information technology curriculum might factor into helping displaced or underemployed individuals actively secure work that will earn them a living wage.
